Application of Dielectric Logging in the Oilfield Area

The technology of dielectric logging is a supplementary technology for exploration and development of the oil and gas field, which determines the dielectric constant of the formation which is the physical property of the rock and fluid by the electromagnetic wave measurement. There is big difference between the dielectric constant of oil, gas, rock matrix and water. The dielectric logging tool mainly responds to the water in the pore network and can measure the dielectric constant and resistivity of the formation in horizontal and vertical directions. Then the water-bearing porosity can be obtained by introducing the dielectric constant into the program. Comparing with the total porosity obtained by conventional logging or nuclear magnetic logging, the fluid saturation can be analyzed. This paper introduces the working principle of dielectric logging and the key technology and main advantages of the new generation of the dielectric logging tool, and then analyses the difficult logging technology problems which dielectric logging can solve, mainly including fluid property analysis of the freshwater formation, fluid property analysis in the heavy oil reservoir, fracture identification and fluid property identification of the fractured formation, thin interbed identification and fine stratification, the distribution of the salinity of the formation water in the sandstone-mudstone sedimentary sequence, evaluation of the water flooding grade and estimation of the structural index of the carbonate profile, analysis of the anisotropy of the formation. Finally, the example of dielectric logging in the oilfield area is analyzed. With the increase of dielectric logging data, the advantages of dielectric logging will gradually emerge.
