Adaptive Gradient Search for Synthesis of Planar Array with Arbitrary Aperture Shape

In this paper, we consider the synthesis of planar array with arbitrary aperture shape. The objective is to optimally fix the elements' locations to reduce the peak sidelobe level (PSL) of the array factor (AF) under interelement spacing constraints. The synthesis problem is formulated as a minimax optimization and it is then solved by our previously proposed adaptive gradient search (AGS). Key issues are discussed to achieve the interelement spacing constraints and aperture shape control. As the degrees of freedom (DoFs) of the elements are fully exploited, and global searching is enabled by involving greed-relaxation in AGS, our proposed approach provides promising results.
