Design of Shark Fin Integrated Antenna Systems for Automotive Applications

The purpose of this paper is to present a compact multiport antenna solution for automotive applications. The proposed multiband design consists of two modified Planar Inverted-F Antennas (PIFA), for MIMO-LTE, covering the triple band frequency of the mobile communication (690-2700 MHz). Additionally, two V2V antennas working at 5.9 GHz are integrated for switch diversity neighboring an antenna covering WiFi dual bands (2.4 GHz, 5 GHz). Finally one patch antenna for GPS application completes the antenna system. All these antennas are suitable for integration in automotive shark fin case. Simulations show less than -6 dB reflection coefficient all over the frequency bands. A prototype is fabricated using CNC laser cutting technology. Simulation results shows good agreement when compared with measurements in terms of return loss. Finally, the LTE-MIMO performance is shown in the presence of high mutual coupling.
