Application of a Binary-Real Coded Cuckoo Search Algorithm for Solving Unit Commitment Problem

This paper proposes a new meta-heuristic optimization algorithm a binary-real coded Cuckoo Search (BCS) algorithm for solving unit commitment (UC) problem. The proposed method applies to minimizing the total generation cost by determining ON/OFF states of units considering problem constraints. The real coded is used to determined the power generated by committed units and the binary coded is used to obtained the status of unit in the schedule time horizon. The BCS algorithm is used to solve the UC problem considering IEEE standard 10 unit test system. The test results comparison with the previously reported results can easily demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed algorithm.
