Torsional Capacity of Thin-Walled Steel Tubular Members Filled with Light-Weight Concrete

In some heavily loaded structures, it is difficult to design a section with acceptable strength either steel section or reinforced section. So, by using the concrete-filled tubes the sections could get the strength of steel in tension enhanced with the compression strength of in filled concrete. In this study, the ultimate torsional capacity of Thin-Walled Tubular Steel (TWTS) members filled with lightweight aggregate concrete was investigated experimentally. The total six specimens were tested experimentally to study the effect of width-thickness ratio (b/t) and the number of stiffeners on the ultimate torque capacity of the tested members. The tests results showed that the ultimate torsional capacity increases by increasing the number of the stiffeners up to (12.5%) and (24%) for specimens with 1mm and 2mm plate thicknesses, respectively. Also, the results showed that by doubling the thickness of the tube, the ultimate torsional capacity increases up to (24%).
