Partical Swarm optimization Tuning Based Controlled Series FACTS for Power System Stability Enhancement

The modern electric power systems conventional power system stabilizer (CPSS) cannot provide the sufficient damping for system oscillations with large loading conditions. Modern optimization technique, namely Partical Swarm optimization (PSO) is employed here to design the damping controllers depend on the optimal parameters of FACTS-based stabilizers to enhance stability and system performance. This paper summarizes how the combination of the series compensation of FACTS as: Thyristor Controlled series Compensator (TCSC), Static Synchronous Series Compensator (SSSC) and CPSS. Controller increases the stability of power system, the capacity of tide lines and damp out low frequency oscillation. The use of advanced control systems provides effective solution for the most common problems with relatively low cost. The proposed approach is applied for single machine-infinite bus system (SMIB). All the simulation of the system models are carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK and given in the form of comparative results with different disturbances for varied loading conditions. Results show that, the PSO-controlled with SSSC is the optimal series FACTS device for increasing the transmission system capability of electric modern systems.
