Investigation of Sulphur in Destruction of the Transformer Paper Oil Insulation

The power transformer is the crucial and vital unit of power system. In a transformer, the transformer oil is used to reduce the temperature of the power transformer and electrically dielectric media. In power transformer, the reactive sulphurcomponents of antioxidant leads to uneven electric stress in paper oil insulation and causes complex problems that affecttransformer insulation. The effects of antioxidants dibenzy1 disulphide(DBDS), passivatorIrgamet® 39 on corrosive action ofpaper oilinsulationisdiscussed in this investigation. An experimentis carried out on paper oil insulation using 200 ml transformer oil with different DBDS and passivator concentration. The reactive sulfuris released as a bi-product after certain ageing of DBDSand forms copper sulphide. Thisprocess of copper sulfideformation isanalyzed using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) andDielectric Spectroscopy Analysis (FTIR). Theseanalysis lead to the study of insulation failure.
