Design, Development, and Control of Rotary Module of Electromagnetic Actuator for Dynamic Mechanical Analysis Using Finite Element Method

The present work deals with design, development, and control of rotary module of a Linear Rotary Electromagnetic Actuator (LREMA) to be used as a driving force in the construction of a Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) setup. For the purpose of designing the rotary actuator, BLDC motor served as the basis owing to its similarity in construction and working principle as the desired model. The mathematical formulation of the motor was done in MATLAB and the model was verified for its correctness. The excitations to stator coils were provided through the hysteresis band current controller. For the construction of the model in stages, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software was utilized. The post-processing results were analysed and the model was then validated through transient co-simulation of ANSYS Maxwell and Simplorer. A further comparison of the output torque of the model with and without Halbach array has been shown reflecting the benefits of the former.
