Terminal Voltage Control of Multi-area Power Systems Using Optimal Control Approach

For multi-area interconnected power systems a robust control strategy based on the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control incorporated with a damping compensator (DC) is introduced in this paper to maintain nominal terminal voltage. In literature, different controllers such as proportional-integral-derivative (PID), fuzzy-logic, linear-quadratic-regulator (LQR) are adopted from time to time for controlling the automatic voltage regulator (AVR). The aim of this work is to improve the AVR dynamics so that it can handle uncertainties and disturbance due to sudden load variations. Moreover, the DC helps to handle the overshoot issue usually power system suffers with. Finally, this paper investigates a comparison of proposed controller with existing control techniques to prove the efficacy of the proposed one. All the Simulink works have been done in MATLAB/SIMULINK platform.
