Use of Iron Nanoparticles Functionalized with Alginate for the Adsorption of Pb(II) Ions from Aqueous Media

In this study the removal of Pb(II) ions from aqueous media is proposed, by their adsorption on iron nanoparticles funtionalized with alginate (Fe-NP-Alg). The alginate required for the iron nanoparticles functionalization was obtained by extraction in alkaline media from marine red algae (Callithamnion corymbosum sp.). The adsorption process was examined as a function of initial solution pH, initial Pb(II) ions concentration and contact time, in batch systems at room temperature (20± 1 °C). The modeling of the experimental results indicated that the obtained iron nanoparticles functionalized with alginate have good adsorption characteristics and can be used as adsorbent in the industrial effluents treatment.
