A Survey of Attacks and their Mitigations in Software Defined Networks

With the advancement in technology and increased innovations in network with low cost of network operators the ability to program network, managing large networks, become easy due to an emerging technology known as SDN software defined networking as accepted by many enterprises. With an excitement of programmability feature developers are rushing SDN functionality and services. To overcome the challenges of conventional networks, Software Defined networking separates control plane and data plane with a programmable interface defined between them that work on a standardized protocol OpenFlow protocol. While considering security issues if SDN, today SDN is a challenging aspect in terms of security.SDN is infected by many serious and disastrous attacks from which Denial of service DOS is most common. Through an analysis of existing attacks and security of SDN in previous research work, researchers found SDN is still prone to major threats and attacks. In this paper attacks and security of sdn are surveyed through comprehensive study of major SDN attack with existing solutions with effectiveness and efficiency of each. The existing solutions are still not completely effective and persistent, through this paper; our further research work would be on SDN attacks with its existing solutions which provide better feasibility and efficiency than prior work to secure SDN.
