Performance Analysis of Data Sensitive Adaptive MAC Protocol for Intra-Hospital Scenario

This paper presents a data sensitive adaptive Medium Access Control (DSA-MAC) protocol for intra-hospital scenario. Main feature of this protocol is to prioritize the node, based on sensitivity of data it has to communicate. Recent advancements in Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) supported biomedical sensors, have given new direction to the health monitoring techniques. In wireless body area network, multiple biomedical sensors are planted on/in the patient's body which is wirelessly linked to the network. The standard protocol such as IEEE 802.15.4 for body area network (BAN) cannot fulfil all the requirements as they do not assist or maintain prioritized and varied data transfer requirements of various medical sensor nodes. This paper proposes a DSA-MAC protocol by prioritizing the available medical sensor data for channel allocation. The performance analysis of DSA-MAC shows that it outperforms other conventional MAC protocols in terms of throughput, data collision ratio, energy-consumption and average transmission time.
