Demographic Influence on Opioid Misuse

The increased opioid misuse during the last decades have led to a drug epidemic in the United States. The extensive use of legally prescribed opioids (such as morphine, hydrocodone, hydromorphone, fentanyl, among others) in the late 90's trigger an unprecedented crisis. In order to understand this phenomenon several variables should be addressed, ranging from medical information to demographic and social variables. This imposes a challenge to describe the opioids crisis and generate models as diverse sources should be related. The social component of opioid epidemics imposes a spatial nature to its assessment. A python based visualization tool is described, the workflow to summarize information involving different data sources is presented. This work looks forward to provide an alternative resource to understand the opioid epidemic dynamics.
