Analysis and Implementation of Discontinuous Current Modes for a Buck Converter with GaN Device

Buck converter operating in discontinuous current mode with GaN device on high switching operating frequency and high power density applications is analyzed in this paper. With the considerations of parasitic parameters, traditional analysis results of operation stages are not accurate and need to be revised. Three different discontinuous current modes are described, in one of which zero-voltage-switching can be realized. Corresponding to this mode, the input-output relationship is analyzed precisely and the constraint boundary is also given. The conclusions are verified by a 200W prototype.
