Long-term flexibility analysis of the power sector in South East Europe

The research analyses the future of regional market integration for power systems in the South East Europe (SEE). It looks at an energy transition scenario, when SEE power sector targets a profound decarbonisation pathway. It translates to an over 50% renewable production share in the power sector in the SEE region according to the SEERMAP project estimates. We further assess the sustainability of the SEE power sector in the year 2030, from the point of view of security of supply and system reliability. With the help of a European unit commitment model (EPMM), we analyse the availability of reserve capacities in the system, as well as the performance of the system in the most critical weeks of 2030. Our results indicate that the target scenario is realistic from a system flexibility and RES integration point of view, with sufficient security of supply levels of the SEE power sector in 2030.
