ACB Based Group Paging Overload Control Method for Massive MTC Accesses in LTE Networks

Machine-type communication (MTC) is a promising technology to constitute a significant part of the fifth-generation (5G) systems. Group paging (GP) is a very effective method to solve network overload problem resulted by massive MTC devices. However, its performances dramatically decrease when increasing the number of MTC devices being paged. To solve this problem, a group paging overload control method based on access class barring (ACB) is proposed in this paper. In ACB-based group paging overload control method (AGO), the base station (BS) controls the number of devices connected to the network at the same time through the ACB mechanism, and scatters the paging operation of the MTC devices over a GP interval instead of letting all of the devices start the channel access procedure at nearly the same time. Simulation results show that compared with classical Group paging (GP) and Pre-backoff (PBO), the paging method we proposed improves the access success probability of MTC devices.
