Characterization of Slider Heating Due to Write Signal

This article presents an experimental method that uses the embedded contact sensor (ECS) in the head to characterize the head temperature change due to the electrical write signal. The thermal characterization results show that the head temperature rise depends directly on the electrical power dissipated in the head. Dependence on signal frequency was also observed. A time-domain analysis is developed to derive the head temperature change for any time-domain write signal waveforms based on the thermal characterization results. Practical applications of the methods and further works are also discussed.
