A Survey on Emotion Recognition from EEG Signals: Approaches, Techniques & Challenges

Interest have been grown in recent years, emotion recognition system using EEG signal from brain waves for identifying personality traits based on mind-machine interfaces (brain-computer interfaces) helps the decision-making systems to determine based on their mental state. The major applications of emotion recognition and identification in the signal are stress level of the person, lie detection, the actual feeling of the person, etc. This paper collectively summarizes a number of recent methodologies and deciphers the various challenges and issues in using EEG signal for emotion recognition. The process of the emotion recognition from EEG signal begins with preprocessing followed by feature extraction and based on which classification is done. This paper also analyzes the various evaluation metrics such as sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy, where the maximum result obtained so far is 89% of accuracy in classification with respect to emotion detection and recognition.
