Conventional and Hybrid Perturb & Observe based Maximum Power Point Tracking for Solar System

The perturb and observe (P&O) method is an easily understood algorithm of maximum power point tracing. Huge and rapid changes in irradiance (G) and temperature (T) however, pose several problems for the P&O method. The conventional P&O based MPPT techniques takes much time to reach the MPPT condition. When irradiance and temperature changes rapidly then at that time the conventional P&O algorithm takes the incorrect decision. Sometimes direction of perturb is incorrect. In this paper it is shown that by using modified P&O (M-P&O) the mentioned problem is overcome by taking an initial guess point of the duty cycle. This is done by basing on temperature and the irradiance value of surrounding which in turn helps in achieving maximum power point (MPP) under all possible situations. In this paper P&O and modified P&O based MPPT algorithm is implemented in MATLAB SIMULINK by connecting a boost converter with a solar cell. Photovoltaic (PV) system gets an improved output power using this method and the time taken to reach the MPPT condition also decreases.
