PROT-ONE project: a passive solution to increase Li-Ion batteries safety

The most important critical aspect in the use of Lithium rechargeable batteries is the thermal runaway of one cell, with consequent propagation to the surrounding cells, up to the entire battery. While the consequence of the “collapse” of one single cell is generally, manageable, the propagation to groups of cells, or to the entire battery, is generally catastrophic. The hardware configuration of the battery can be optimized in order to minimize the probability of thermal runaway propagation. This paper compare some common solutions to this problem and propose a different approach.
