Experimental Steady-State and Transient Analysis of a Behind-The-Meter Battery Storage for Residential Customers with PV Systems

Several countries and States within the US with high levels of PV penetration are providing significant incentives to pair behind-the-meter battery energy storage systems (BESS) with Photovoltaic (PV) systems, in an effort to preserve the penetration of renewable energy systems and reduce greenhouse gases. In this paper, some experimental tests on commercial BESS, that is integrated with an existing PV system, are conducted to determine its round-trip efficiency, its power quality when operating in back-up mode, and its dynamic response to sudden changes in local load as well as grid outages.
