Application of Dielectric and Magnetic Layered Substrate in Antenna Gain Enhancement

In this paper we propose a method to improve antenna gain using magnetic and dielectric layers. The use of Artificial Magnetic Conductors (AMC) and Magneto-Dielectric (MD) for increasing gain was proposed before. The method we are proposing has similar effect on gain with a simpler structure. We suggest using layers of dielectric and magnetic materials in sequence as the antenna substrate. This method offers less complexity and easier fabrication than AMC and MD methods. For proof of concept, different monopole antenna configurations are investigated and their performances are evaluated at the resonance frequency. The proposed monopole antennas based on dielectric/magnetic materials layered substrate have showed a superior radiation performance compared to previously studied monopole on dielectric or MD substrate. The sequence of the materials can be optimized in terms of materials' properties and physical dimensions in order to achieve the desired operating frequency band and antenna radiation characteristics.
