A Design of Neodymium Free Spoke-type Machine for High Power Density and Efficiency

This paper describes the design, analysis, and performance evaluation of a permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) for heating and cooling circulation pump in a building. The PMs inside the rotor are arranged in a spoke shape to concentrate a magnetic flux density effectively, and a driving stability is verified through the magnetization and demagnetization analysis. Machine design to maximize power density is completed and prototype is manufactured. Compared with conventional induction machine (IM), the weight and volume are reduced by 35%, the rated efficiency is increased by 4.2^%p. The total production costs is expected to be less than IM thanks to low-cost ferrite PM as well as volume reduction.
