Polish Power Generation Sector in the Conditions of Growing Contribution of Renewable Energy Sources

The paper discusses the current state and the outlook for the development of the Polish power generation sector. Taking into account the latest International Energy Agency (IEA) reports defining current trends and perspectives in the global energy sector, the authors pointed to the possibility of significant reduction of CO2 emissions by replacing outdated and ineffective coal-fired power plants by new high-efficiency supercritical power units and CCGT plants. With the assumed increase in the share of renewable energy sources (RES) in the Polish power system, these units will also fulfill the important role of sources stabilizing the electrical grid. This means that it will be necessary to ensure their greater operational flexibility, including duo-block concept.
