On the Applications of S-Shaped Split Ring Resonators (S-SRR) in Sensors, Filters, and Antennas

This paper is focused on the principle of operation and the applications of S-shaped split ring resonators (S-SRRs). Therefore, principle of operation of S-SRRs, especially its excitation in coplanar waveguide technology is explained. The application of S-SRRs to the design of fixed-frequency and tunable bandstop and bandpass filters is demonstrated. It is also shown that complementary version of S-SRRs can be used for the realization of differential bandpass filters with common-mode suppression. Then, the application of S-SRRs in the design of small antennas and notched-band ultra-wideband antennas are reviewed. Finally, its shown that due to their compact size and excitation method, S-SRRs can be used for the design of angular displacement and velocity sensors, and compact RFID tags.
