Wideband Communication Channel Sounding for Wireless Industrial Internet-of-Things Applications

This paper describes an extensive channel sounding exercise to measure, characterize and model the wireless channel in an indoor factory environment to enable industrial internet-of-things (IIoT) applications. A careful understanding of the wireless propagation environment is critical to the successful design and deployment of wireless networks for IIoT devices in an indoor factory environment. In this reported exercise, measurements have been carried out in 2.4GHz and 5GHz ISM frequency bands with a channel bandwidth of 40MHz. The measurement results from the current exercise have been compared with the results from earlier measurements carried out by United States National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). It is seen that the mean excess delay in Non-Line-of-Sight scenarios is typically 2.5x that of Line-of-Sight scenarios and mean RMS delay in Non-Line-of-Sight scenarios is typically 2.32x that of Line-of-Sight scenarios.
