Hydrogenated Fluorographene: A Fluorographene Derivative with Remarkable Third-Order Nonlinear Response

Fluorinated graphene (C_xF_y) is the stoichiometric member of the family of fluorographenes, a class of graphene derivatives in which carbon atoms are covalently linked with fluorine atoms thus presenting some (variable) degree of sp³ hybridization depending on the F-content. Fluorographene being a wide bandgap semiconductor, represents the only stoichiometric graphene halide which is stable at ambient conditions and has attracted the research interest because it constitutes a promising alternative for graphene derivatization being used as a suitable precursor for the synthesis of several graphene derivatives, as for example amino-graphenes, cyano-graphene, carboxy-graphene, sulfur-linked derivatives, alkylated graphenes etc. Hydrogenated fluorographene, abbreviated CFH, is a typical example of partially hydrogenated fluorographene with very interesting optoelectronic properties. In this work, some key results of the systematic investigation of the nonlinear optical response of fully fluorinated graphene referred as C₁F₁ or CF, and C₁₈H_2.2F_2.8, or simply CFH, obtained under visible and infrared, ns and ps laser excitation conditions will be presented and discussed.
