Simulation Study on Polishing of Complex Surfaces by Non-Newtonian Fluids

Shear thickening fluid polishing (STFP)is one type of the non-Newtonian fluids which is used to polish the complex shapes. This method is applied to machine the complex surfaces of mold in this study. The principle and performance of STFP was introduced. The parameters having significant influence on the STFP process, including polishing speed, abrasive concentration, abrasive sizes were experimentally investigated. In these parameters, the effect of inclination angle to the machining process is simulated in this paper. The inclination angle parameters of the workpieces such as 0°, 10°, 15°, 20°, and 25° are used during the simulation process. Cutting pressure area and polishing fluid flow characteristics will be presented and analyzed. When inclination angle parameters exceed 15°, the pressure area is distributed throughout all the surface of the surfaces. The maximum pressure can be reached about 7.95 kPa. Based on the simulation results to establish conditions for later experimental research.
