Ambient Light Monitoring System for Low Power and Lossy Networks Using RPL Routing Protocol

An intelligent ambient lighting system has drawn a wide attention in recent years. Wireless Sensor networks for ambient monitoring is a multi-hop, self-organizing network with large number of sensor nodes. Ambient monitoring system based on The Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) over Low-power Wireless Personal Area Network protocol (6LoWPAN) combined with wireless sensing technology can be a cost effective solution. In this paper, the performance of Routing Protocol for Low Power and Lossy Network (RPL) for ambient light monitoring application is analyzed in terms of Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR) and delay for both linear and random topologies. Cooja simulator in Contiki Operating System is utilized in the work. From the analysis, it is inferred that the performance of PDR is found to be better in random topology than in linear topology with delay as a tradeoff.
