AirSense: An Air Contaminant Detection System

Air pollution has been one of rising issues that are affecting people’s health around the world. The amount of air contaminants is enough to cause serious health diseases such as stroke, cancer, and respiratory infections which, in the long term, leads to premature deaths. To alleviate this risk, it comes first to allow people to know the dangerous level of the air contaminants around them to avoid their harmful effects and act upon it. Through the revolution of the Internet of Things that interconnects the digital information around us, we were able to design "AirSense", a device to measure the level of the toxic air contaminants in the atmosphere. AirSense captures the data through integrated sensors and provides users with the test results over a smartphone. The device is tested to measure the quality of the air around the University of Bridgeport, and a full plan is described with its feasibility strategy. Combining IoT with wearable technology may provide a way for users to stay notified of high air pollution levels and thus help reduce health concerns for many people.
