Design of a Six-Phase Fault-Tolerant Electric Motor for an Aircraft Fuel Pump

This paper presents a multidisciplinary design algorithm of permanent magnet electric motors, which can be used in the design of six-phase fault-tolerant permanent magnet electric motors for aircraft fuel pumps. According to the the algorithm, a 15-kW 6000-rpm permanent magnet electric motor with a mass of 3.3 kg was calculated. Calculation steps were described by analytical methods and finite element method. Based on the analytical calculations, a three-dimensional model was created, which showed a high degree of convergence with the results of analytical calculations. A continuation of these studies will be the creation of a full-size permanent magnet electrical machine prototype for fuel pump and its tests, including tests as a part of a fuel pump.
