Coastal surface-current mapping to 200 km with Long-Range SeaSondes

Since Spring 2000, several Long-Range SeaSondes (low-band shore-based HF radars) have begun operation at sites on the Atlantic, Gulf, and Pacific coasts. Radiating below 5 MHz, typical ranges of 200 km can be achieved. Examples from Monterey Bay are presented. The oceanographic uses, as well as the tradeoffs and limitations, of these radars are examined.
