Hybrid Microgrid Controller Analysis and Design for a Campus Grid

Microgrids with Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) have proved to be a propitious alternative to the traditional distribution systems. This is due to the increased resiliency, efficiency and reliability offered by these grids. This paper discusses the design and operation of a microgrid and its associated controller for the Clemson University main campus. The virtual inertia has been emulated in the microgrid to make it closely resemble the one emulating a synchronous generator. A coordination controller has been developed for the systematic dispatch of Photovoltaic (PV) and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). The microgrid has been sized to perform both grid-connected and two days of islanding operation. The designed grid exhibits a nearly seamless transition from the grid-connected mode to the islanded mode and vice versa. The system also successfully satisfies the IEEE Std 1547.4. A business case has also been developed for the proposed microgrid that suggests its implementation due to economic viability.
