Combined Energy Efficient Algorithms for Extending the Lifetime of Dynamic Ad Hoc Wireless Sensor Networks

Based on a previous work, this paper proposes a new combined algorithm developed to increase the energy efficiency of wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The solution of the optimization problem, based on genetic algorithms (GA), provides the number of clusters along with the cluster structure. The mechanism of extending the lifetime of the networks consists in adequately changing roles between cluster heads and regular nodes. Intensive simulation studies have confirmed the validity and efficiency of the proposed solutions as compared to the variant based on fixed roles assigned to the network nodes.
