Laser Attenuation Model in Low Visibility Fog

Fog is an important factor affecting radar detection and free-space optical communication (FSO) because the detection capability and communication quality are largely affected by fog attenuation. Therefore, obtaining a fog attenuation model has attracted widespread attention. Firstly, the scattering characteristics of a single fog particle to laser light are obtained by using the Mie scattering theory. Then the fog attenuation is obtained based on the Monte Carlo method. On this basis, the attenuation of lasers with different wavelengths in two kinds of fog is calculated, and the empirical model is summarized. It is compared with the attenuation model obtained by measurement. It was found that under low visibility, the calculated results are more in line with the experimental results.
