Performance Evaluation of TSCH in Industrial WSN

Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) is one of the emerging technology for industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSN). An industrial network is a network of smaller units that are focusing on different applications. Each unit has different requirements and therefore, can support different topologies. The present study investigates the influence of network topology on the performance of TSCH. Here, different topologies namely, star, linear and mesh are considered under varying node densities. Further, a hierarchical-hybrid topology is also proposed that enhances the scalability and supports traffic differentiation. The performance of all four topologies of TSCH network is analyzed for battery life, latency, number of interfering links, collisions and reliability. Statistical analysis through spearman correlation is performed to study the impact of network topology on performance metrics. The simulation results show that hierarchal-hybrid topology improves battery life by 94% and reliability by 6.5%, reduces interfering links by 38%, collisions by 84% and allocated cells by 19%, in comparison to mesh topology.
