An Improved STATCOM based on Hybrid Modular Multilevel Converter

This paper presents modeling and application of a static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) to power system. In order to improve the performance of STATCOM, its converter topology adopts the hybrid modular multilevel converter (HMMC) topology and the HMMC is controlled by asymmetric voltage control (AVC) method. The simulation is conducted to eliminate voltage drops due to load variations in the test system through reactive power compensation. To evaluate the performance of the STATCOM, the HMMC and its controllers are designed by using the power system computer aided design/electro-magnetic transient including DC (PSCAD/EMTDC). The results show the steady-state and transient performance of the power system when the load variation occurs in the power system.
