Remote Sensing of Biochemicals in Aerosol Form Using Fluorescence Sensor for Defence and Security

The use of biological warfare agents by terror groups is one of the biggest concerns in today's scenario. The present work provides a solution for early detection of biological warfare agents from standoff distances of up to 1.0 km to mitigate the threat. The experimental results reported in the paper are a part of development of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) system. The system utilizes UV Laser (266 nm) induced fluorescence (LIF) spectroscopy for the detection of bio-molecules in aerosol form. The technology has been demonstrated and the signals from bio aerosols have been detected from distances of up to 1.0 km in day time with detection limit of the order of 106 bacteria per litre.
