PSS design for passivity-aimed control of turboalternators: a LMI approach

For passivity-based stability analysis and design, a turboalternator is seen as a component that must be made passive for the terminal perturbed voltage-current pair so as to ensure L/sub 2/-stability or asymptotic stability when disturbances are cleared. Previous work have been made in that direction but led to an assumption of positive definiteness difficult to meet. In this paper, we design a power system stabilizer based on linear matrix inequalities approach in order to obtain the required passivity property. The turboalternator is expressed in a polytopic model. Simulation results confirm the strategy and show advantages and drawbacks of the passivity approach.
