A General Framework for the Analysis and Design of a Wireless Resonant Motor

Recent developments in emerging technologies such as electric vehicles and electric aircrafts require light weight motors. Conventional motors are generally made up of coils, permanent magnets, heavy iron stator and rotor cores. A motor design in which magnets and magnetic iron cores are removed will drastically reduce the weight of the resulting machine. In this paper we propose a novel wireless resonant motor design without magnetic cores or permanent magnet that can convert energy using wireless power transfer through magnetic resonance inductive coupling of multi-phase coils in the stator and rotor of the motor. Capacitors are added to the multi-phase coils to create resonance and efficient electromechanical energy conversion between these coils. A detail model formulation of the characteristic principles of the motor is elaborated in this paper. Key features like inductances while it rotates, coupling factors of the coils, peak torques, and resonance conditions are all presented. The resulting motors stator and rotor cores will be made of reinforced plastics and could be 3-D printed. This will reduce the overall weight of the machine.
