Agent-based Distributed Event-Triggered Secondary Control for Energy Storage System in Islanded Microgrids - Cyber-Physical Validation

This paper presents a distributed event-triggered secondary control for energy storage systems (ESSs) in islanded microgrids. The multi-agent system is designed to control ESSs with multiple purposes: 1) restoration of frequency and voltage to nominal values, 2) accurate active power sharing and 3) state-of-charge balancing between ESSs. In the distributed event-trigger scheme, the agent does not collect information periodically from neighbors but only when satisfying triggering conditions, that can save communication burden in the microgrid network. The validation of proposed control is implemented on a laboratory cyber-physical system which consists of a digital real time simulator OPAL-RT, a Raspberry PI cluster and a realistic communication network.
