Real-Time Simulation of Brush Behaviors in Chinese Calligraphy with the Sense of Immersion

This paper presents a real-time system for simulating the brush behaviors in Chinese calligraphy. With regards to the geometric profile of the Chinese brush, the “skinned mesh” modeling method has been adopted and an algorithm for fast computing of mesh rotation parameters has been developed to realize the two deformation effects i.e. bending deformation and torsion deformation during the process of brush pen writing. An ink diffusion model based on particle system has been developed. It can control the diffusion effect of ink on the paper surface. Based on the above techniques, a brushwork simulation system featuring a head mount display and a force feedback device has been developed, achieving excellent real-time performance and immersion effect.
