Authentication with brainwaves: a review on the application of EEG as an authentication method

As advancement in technology continues to increase every day, information security has become a major component of most systems. To ensure security, authentication plays a major role. The ability to accurately verify if a person is who he/she claims to be is very crucial in ensuring confidentiality, integrity, and availability. In general, there are essentially three different types of authentication which are, token-based, password-based, and biometric-based. In this paper, we discuss the applications of EEG as an alternative to mainstream biometrics. Brain activity which are represented by EEG signals are much harder to steal or replicate. Advancement in technology has made acquiring EEG signals much more feasible now. Due to this, the use of EEG for authentication has become more popular and promising in research.
