Implementation of IOT in development of intelligent campus lighting system using mesh network

Energy consumption due to the street lighting needs proper monitoring and control to reduce power consumption. Conventional streetlight systems suffer from certain drawbacks as they are manually controlled. This may lead to more power consumption if not monitored properly. In this paper, to diminish power wastage, IOT based streetlight system is actualized utilizing Wi-Fi mesh network. IOT is the rapidly growing technology, for that it is necessary to use low bandwidth, a lightweight protocol like MQ Telemetry Transport protocol. The street lamp uses a Wi-Fi module, controller and various sensors for power measurement & object detection. To connect all nodes of streetlights with a router, we use a Wi-Fi mesh network. There is one central base station used to monitor and control the streetlights according to seasonal data. Adafruit.IO is used as MQTT broker or server. Using this broker communicate between central base station & each node of streetlights. Adafruit.IO also provides the dashboard facility, by using this can control individual streetlights remotely using dashboard switches. In case of failure of the streetlight, it sends intimation to the operator. Also, at each node provided one panic button, the individual in peril can squeeze this button which raises a caution at security room.
