An Effective Method of Optimal DG Location, Type and Size to Deal with Power System Constraints

Power system is facing tremendous changes due to increasing load demand in the presence of limited generation capacity as well as constrained transmission infrastructure. This is leading to several consequences like voltage instability and congestion. Advancements in harnessing energy from renewable energy sources and deregulated power market scenario has made distribution generation (DG) to emerge as a key player in modern power system. Strategic placement of DG in power system network can increase the efficiency, reliability and security by reducing system loss, improving voltage profile. This paper intends to find optimal bus using voltage sensitivity index for DG placement and a novel method is attempted for optimal DG size and type. The proposed method is demonstrated on a standard IEEE -14 bus system and the simulation results obtained are discussed briefly.
