Fault Tolerant Control of Hybrid Wind-Solar Generation System

Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm of a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) based wind generation system extract maximum mechanical power corresponding to a specified wind speed. This mechanical power is the combination of stator power and slip power available in the rotor. In case of a fault in load side converter power exchange between rotor and load is zero. Hence to maximize the power generation from a DFIG based wind generation system during a fault in Load Side Converter (LSC), the stator power need to be maximized. This paper proposes a new fault-tolerant control algorithm for a hybrid wind-solar generation system for operation of DFIG during a fault in LSC. The proposed control algorithm shifts DFIG operation from Maximum Mechanical Power Point to Maximum Stator Power Point. The rotor power required to operate at maximum stator power is supplied from a battery bank supported by a Solar PV system. The proposed scheme is simulated in MATLAB/Simulink and experimentally validated in a laboratory prototype.
