Design of a Two-Tier WSN-based IoT Surveillance System with Cloud Integration

WSN and Cloud technologies constitute the key enabling technologies of the IIoT. WSNs are making up the perception and the network layers, while cloud technologies appertain to the middleware, application and the business layers of the IoT architecture. This paper investigates the use of two-tier WSNs with cloud integration for the design and development of an IoT-based surveillance system. In addition, the work overcomes the challenge of cost and network data loss by proposing a low-cost solution were each node in the WSN fuses data from both fire and motion sensors in a fuzzy logic decision system to evaluate the criticality of the event detected. The sensors nodes are connected through a ZigBee network to their coordinators, while the coordinators and the base station are connected through a Wireless RF network, forming the two-tier network. The whole system is integrated with a cloud platform for data storage and monitoring of the fuzzy logic evaluated events. Simulation results showed successful real-time event detection, evaluation, and storage, with minimal data loss. The proposed system model will be suitable for both outdoor and indoor environments.
