Efficiency Improvement in Management of Relay Protection System with Use of Adaptive Algorithms

The world’s producers of relay protection devices have set the course for transition to digital microprocessor terminals. The issues related to the collection of necessary information, adaptation methods and the effect of some short circuits recognition have not been sufficiently developed. This is due to the lack of information, assessment of recognition ability of the obtained algorithms of relay protection and automation. The algorithms of the primary (current cut-off) and back-up (excess current cut-out) protection with an adaptive setting, with an increased sensitivity coefficient have been proposed in the article. They will allow the parameters of operation to be adjusted depending on the changes in weather conditions and fluctuations in power consumption in the electrical grid. The methods of calculation of the operating current of relay protection based on the type of damage in case of emergency and calculating the pickup setting for the short circuit current of positive, reverse, and zero-sequences corresponding to the type of damage in real time have been proposed.
