A 2-By-2 Sub-Array for Scalable 28GHz mmWave Phased Array Horn Antenna in 5G Network

The upcoming 5^th Generation (5G) technology in mobile communication has led to many designs of millimeter-Wave (mmWave) Phased Array Antenna that can offer high antenna gain and ability in beamforming at different angles, with the aims to achieve higher data transfer rate and low latency. This paper presents a scalable solution for 28GHz mmWave Phased Array Horn Antenna for applications in the 5G network. The Phased Array Horn Antenna is made up of M x N numbers of smaller unit of 2-By-2 Sub-Array Horn Antenna, arranging in rectangular array layout. Each 2-By-2 Sub-Array Horn Antenna consists of four horn radiating elements in a 2 x 2 matrix layout, along with a Qual-Core Phase-Shifter Integrated Circuit (IC) that is integrated within the antenna structure, to introduce phase difference to the four radiating elements in the Sub-Array Antenna for beam-steering purposes. This paper details the design of the 2-By-2 Sub-Array Horn Antenna along with its simulated antenna performance, as well as the different configurations of Phased Array Horn Antenna and their performance characteristics.
