Evaluation of Vascular Status and Detection of Diseases Using Non-Invasive Bio-Impedance Analysis

Bioimpedance analysis (BIA) is a safe and cost-efficient method that has been recently used in the diagnosis of diseases and monitoring the clinical condition. Vascular diseases are the diseases which affect the blood vessels (arteries and veins) of the circulatory system, causing severe or fatal health problems. The most common vascular diseases are atherosclerosis, occlusion and swelling (aneurysm). Atherosclerosis is a disease in which the plaques build up on the inner vessel wall, while the swelling occurs when a part of vessel wall weakens and forms abnormal bulge called aneurysm. The objective of this paper is to validate the usage of non-invasive bio-impedance analysis in evaluating the vascular status and detecting various diseases. Mathematical models and finite elements models are used to correlate between the bioimpedance measurements and three vascular statuses; which are normal, stenosis and aneurysm. Moreover, multi-segments impedance measurements are carried out in this research to detect the infected segment of vessel. The simulation results clarify the ability of bioimpedance analysis in detecting different vascular disorders.
